Circular economy

Circular economy brings new opportunities

Circular economy is not just about environmental responsibility – it also concerns new thinking and development.

At its best, circular economy combines a profitable business idea with positive environmental impacts.

In practice, this means utilizing side streams, improving resource efficiency and creating renewable solutions. Keeping materials and energy in circulation improves resource efficiency and new business opportunities arise.

Our circular economy services create practical solutions. We support the utilization of waste and side streams with End of Waste (EoW) - solutions which transform waste into raw materials. We help identify and develop opportunities based on side streams, such as in biogas and biochar.

End Of Waste (EoW)

From waste to raw material – End of Waste - process is an opportunity

End of Waste (EoW) ‑procedure officially determines, when material no longer is defined as waste. If the conditions and quality requirements of the EU Waste Directive are met, the material can be reused as a regular raw material. This way, usable materials can be circulated.

Key to utilize side streams

The reuse of industrial side streams and materials is slowed down or prevented due to waste status. A lot of administrative work is spent on storing and processing waste, for example related to waste legislation and environmental permits. When usable raw materials end up as waste, money and resources are lost.

With the EoW - procedure, waste can be officially converted into raw material if environmental and quality requirements are met and a potential market for the raw material is found.

Feasib Ltd offers comprehensive support for EoW - process

  • Preliminary study: process description and assessment of whether it is worth proceeding in the process. Description of profitability changes and benefits.
  • Advice, sparring, gathering background information, examining alternatives, study of use cases ja limitations.
  • Managing the permit process, filling in the application

Evaluation criteria

In order to remove waste status, it must meet certain assessment criteria.

According to EU and Finnish legislation, the following key criteria must be assessed on a case-by-case basis when considering EoW status:

  • Processing
  • Intended use
  • Market or demand

  • Technical requirements and legislation

  • Non-harm
  • Assessment report

End of Waste - case for Laiva Gold Ltd

As a result of the EoW - application we prepared for Laiva Gold Ltd, part of the mining waste extracted as side rock from the Laivakangas gold mine received the “No More Waste” status.

This means that it can now be used in infrastructure construction also outside the mining area, e.g. as railway ballast, in port construction, or even in wind farms. In the future, this CE-marked rock material will generate sales revenue for its owner and save virgin, non-renewable natural resources.

In this case, there are quite significant masses available: about

5.9 Mt of this rock is piled up. That means about 150,000 truckloads.

Biogas

Holistic development for biogas sector

Feasib Ltd offers expert services to the biogas industry that support the entire value chain, from inputs to the further processing of end products. Biogas studies are always tailored to the customer's needs, on a case-by-case basis.

Biogas studies - case examples

Regional economic impacts of bioenergy demand

Feasib conducted an extensive study for the Kaustinen region on the current state of the biogas market, demand potential and business conditions. The results of the study provided the region with a concrete view of the demand for bioenergy, the factors affecting it and the development prospects. These provided a basis for investment planning.

The study identified key growth prerequisites: building a distribution network, productizing biogas for different customer groups, ensuring reliability of delivery and competitive pricing.

Study of digestate utilization options

Feasib studied the utilization, processing options and markets of digestate generated in the Kaustinen region. The work also included a cultivation experiment, which provided additional practical information on the functionality of digestate in growing media. The study evaluated various technical solutions for the further processing of digestate, of which a profitability analysis was prepared for a few selected ones.

In addition, the limitations set by legislation were studied and a SWOT analysis was prepared for recycled fertilizers. The study also mapped the regional market potential of digestate and its development in the region.

Biogas guide

Feasib prepared a comprehensive biogas guide for the Kaustinen region,

representing regional biogas scenario, market situation, technologies, feedstock, legislation and future development prospects.

Guide includes:

  • Biogas lifecycle, feedstock, plant technology and products
  • Development prospects, challenges, legislation, funding, environmental permits and financial support in biogas sector
  • Development pathways: production, demand, distribution network, further processing and utilization of side streams

Our strengths:

  • Strong regional expertise – Thorough local studies on biogas demand, production and markets
  • Deep technical understanding – processing digestate, technologies and processes
  • Practical services –  growing experiments, fertilizer product reviews, concrete modeling
  • Strategic and communication materials – biogas guides, roadmaps
  • Tailored service – each study is designed based on customer's needs
  • Several experts with special skills complementing each other

Biochar

Biochar studies on profitability and usability

We offer technical and economical studies and tailored pilot tests to examine biochar characteristics in e.g water treatment. We participate in steering groups of biochar projects and follow the development of biochar activities.

Biochar studies - case exemple

Pyrolysis of wastewater treatment plant sludge and municipal biowaste into biochar

We conducted a technical and economic study on pyrolysis of wastewater treatment sludge and municipal biowaste, biochar use-cases, biochar markets and production profitability, future visions for wastewater sludge treatment and alternative technologies.

The study examined wastewater treatment sludge and municipal biowaste generated in Kuusamo as a raw material for locally produced biochar.
